Sloan and Hawkins dominate on Tawakoni
By: Conor Harrison

The water was up on Lake Tawakoni for the Bass Champs North Division tournament on June 6, and Corsicana angler Terry Hawkins, along with his partner, Drew Sloan, of Scurry, crushed 215 other teams with 21.5 pounds to win.

The pair beat the second place team by 7.13 pounds to claim the $20,000 winner’s check, plus an additional $1,000 for catching the big bass of the tournament — a 5.55-pounder caught late in the day.

All told, Bass Champs paid back 111% to the anglers totaling $69,130.
Hawkins said it was a beautiful day to be on the water, with a light southeast wind and perfect conditions.

“We started out and really didn’t have a spot,” he said. “I didn’t know how muddy the lake was going to be, so we started down south and nothing was happening. We discussed what to do and decided to hit some main lake points and work our way back into some coves.”

At the first point the pair tried, they hooked a 3-pounder on a swimjig, then followed it up with another keeper.

“We kept on going past the point and then wondered why are we going further?” Hawkins said. “We just got two bites on that point.”
After fishing a little longer, the pair started up the lake, hitting points that didn’t have other boats on them.

“We started working a point and I had the trolling motor on high,” Hawkins said. “I noticed a stick in the water by itself and saw a flicker. I picked up an Ima Skimmer top-water and caught a 15-incher. The next cast, I caught another good keeper.”
Hawkins positioned the boat where Sloan could fish a point and Hawkins could fish a laydown and the pair caught a limit quickly.

“It was a small limit, but I picked up a Biffle Bug and began upgrading,” he said. “We started trading 2-pounder for 3-pounders.”
The team knew they were on a good point, so they repositioned the boat and began casting at different angles.

“We sat there all day,” Hawkins said. “We just kept upgrading and there was a laydown I kept throwing at. I finally picked up a 10-inch Berkley Power Worm in blue fleck color and I must have thrown 20 times in the same spot. I just kept working it and our big bass finally hit it. That was our last fish.”
The pair were shocked when they arrived at the weigh-in — they had no idea they had caught so many good fish.

“I never would have thought we would have won,” Hawkins added. “I know what that lake can do and the quality of fishermen in Bass Champs. We just had our heads down and kept pressing.”

It was the pair’s first Bass Champs win, and Hawkins said he wanted to thank All-Terrain Tackle, McCoys Fishing Line, Towel Rods and Fun N Sun Boats. Sloan gave a shoutout to New Tech Lures, Optimum Baits, Ima Skimmer Lures and Denali Rods.
In second place, the team of Nolan Jackson, Quinlan, and Dirk Smith, Farmersville, brought 14.37 pounds to the scales to cash a check for $5,000.

“We got to our first spot about 6:45 a.m. and wound up catching three fish,” Jackson said. “They all came on Yellow Magic top-waters. We ran to another spot and there were nine boats when we got there. It was crazy. We went back to our original spot and caught a couple more.”

This was the team’s second Bass Champs tournament, and they were shocked at the number of boats fishing.

“We didn’t think we’d get close to second place,” Jackson said. “I knew from prefishing the lake it was going to be tough. I thought a few teams would catch a big bag. The lake has changed so much in the past month. When we started prefishing, it was 9 feet low. A couple of weeks later and it is overflowing.”
During their practice, the water was very muddy, so they started the day by flipping a jig. That didn’t last long.

“I looked down and could see my jig,” Jackson said. “We had way more visibility than I thought. I changed to a top-water pretty quick.”
The team wanted to thank Rockwall Marine and Native Outdoors.

In third, the team of Jason Conn, Anna, and Craig Anderson, Quinlan, caught five fish all day, but it was enough to bring 13.75 pounds to the weigh-in.

“I threw a frog all day and my partner threw a Yellow Magic top-water,” Anderson said. “This is my home lake, but I hadn’t fished it in almost a year. We caught two early on the frog, then 20 minutes later we caught a 4-pounder 15 feet off the bank in flooded grass. We caught another one on the backside of the point and I caught one on a frog a little later — that was it.”
