| Shelton & Massey win over $30,000 at Bass Champs on Lake Falcon |

Bass Champs South Region anglers hit Lake Falcon for the second time this year, fishing for an unheard of 171% payback totaling $53,850 in cash and prizes. All any two person team had to do was catch and weigh in three of their best bass to hit the money line. The top 15 teams went home with winnings, but it was the team of Allen Shelton and Jeff Massey who won not only 1st place, but Big Bass AND six of the sponsor bonuses!
“We almost didn’t fish this tournament,” Shelton began. “I’m sure glad we did – it paid off big!” Once the decision was made to compete, they went to Falcon and hit some familiar spots that had done well for them in the past. “The morning started out horrible for us. We went to an area with deep rocks, about 15’-20’. We didn’t catch a single fish.” They went to a shallow area, and caught a few little ones. “They just weren’t the fish we were after. We decided to go back to our first spot and try it again.” Throwing crank baits, their fish turned on. First they caught one a little over seven pounds. Their second keeper was their big one. A 9.86 lb bass hit Shelton’s crank bait, putting their weight at over 17 pounds on two fish. They caught one more in the five pound range to rack up their 22.25 lb limit, winning the tournament by more than three pounds! Bass Champs awarded them the Ford F-150 grand prize, then Skeeter added another $5,000 to their winnings. These guys have been fishing Bass Champs since they first began, and knew how to rake in on even more through sponsor incentives. Before their payout was done, they had won the Under Armour bonus, Abu Garcia Revo, Costa Del Mar, Bio Bor and the Sure Life bonuses! And they had the Big Bass of the tournament for another $500 check. All total, their prize package was worth over $30,000! “We fish all four regions of Bass Champs, but this is our first 1st place win in the South Region.” All total, they now have five 1st place wins to their name. “Now we need a win in the East Region!” The team would like to thank Bass Champs for putting on great tournaments, Skeeter boats, Fun N Sun and Sure Life.
Scott Saunders and Cody Johnson brought in a 19.14 lb limit and won 2nd place for $2,500. “We caught a few good ones early, we just couldn’t get that third good one in the boat.” They used Texas rigged Zoom speed worms along shallow brush in coves. “We had a limit by around 8:15, and culled throughout the day.” They hit about 20 spots, but caught their two biggest in the same area. “When we had our biggest one on, it got wrapped up in the brush, and it got pretty hectic for a little while!” Their kicker weighed in at 7.65 lbs, anchoring their 2nd place win. In addition to their cash winnings, they also won the Ford Bonus giving them one year of free entries into any Bass Champs tournaments, up to a $5,000 value. The team would like to thank Falcon Lake Tackle, and Bass Champs. “Bass Champs is a really good deal, and a well-organized tournament trail.”
Third place was won by Johnnie Barnes III and Sonny Osborne Jr. “The day started out really good for us. Our first bite produced a six pounder. We were in Tigers, and after that they stopped biting so we made a move to our second spot and ended up staying there the rest of the day.” It was a 50 yard stretch, and they were using Texas rigged Ol’ Monster redbug worms with half ounce weights. “We caught a lot of fish, probably about fifteen keepers in the 3 to 4 pound range.” They missed a 7 pounder early in the day, but on their last cast at 2:25 put a 7.62 in the boat that secured their 3rd place finish and a check for $1,250. “We’d like to thank our families for all of their support as we fish throughout the years. We’d also like to thank the Bass Champs staff, they always do a fantastic job. We don’t fish any other tournament trails – there’s no reason to!”
It took 10.66 lbs to win a check in fifteen places paid. Rodolfo Gonzalez and Sergio Herrera won the last check in this event.
With only one tournament left for South Region anglers, the Angler of the Year top five teams are:

The final South Region tournament will be on May 31st at Amistad. In the meantime, Bass Champs staff and crew will be headed to Sam Rayburn on May 3rd for the East Region event #4.
