“Team Shook-Iles Take Home New Ford Truck for Bass Champs’ Win”
By: Alison Hart

One hundred and eighty teams searched the waters of Lake Sam Rayburn on Saturday, Jan. 18, all in hopes of luring the win in Bass Champs’ first tournament of the 2014 East Region series.

Heightening the tournament’s appeal, Bass Champs guaranteed competing anglers a first-place prize of a brand new Ford pickup truck. Tournament founder and president, Chad Potts, handed out over $50,000 in cash prizes over the course of the day, a 122-percent payback to teams.

A total of 260 fish were weighed, totaling 782.34 pounds in all. The average fish weight was 3.01 pounds, with 67 total limits.

The team of Brian Shook and Danny Iles took Saturday’s win with a total weigh-in of 23.71 pounds, including a 10.20-pound Big Bass hopeful. When asked about their day on the water, the anglers commented that it went “pretty well,” and that they “covered a lot of water.” The team caught their first keeper around 8:30 a.m., and “seven or eight” bass throughout the remainder of the day while fishing at 15 to 20 foot depths and using 6th Sense crankbaits. The team caught their last keeper around 1:30 p.m. Team Shook-Iles, of China, Tex. and Hemphill, Tex., respectively, would like to thank their sponsors for supporting them in Saturday’s win: Power Tackle, Need More Tackle, 6th Sense Lures, Jorand Marine, Carlson Marine, Costa Sunglasses, and Ranger Boats. The team would also like to especially thank Danny’s mom for her support. Bass Champs awarded over $25,000 to Team Shook-Iles for the win, including a Ford F-150.

Coming in second for the day with a 19.49-pound weigh-in was the team of Jonathan Garrie and Wayne Triana Jr. The team commented that they “figured the fishing would be tough” for the day: the anglers caught all of their five fish, including two 5-pounders, before 10:30 a.m. Garrie and Triana Jr. caught their second place worthy sack using 6th Sense umbrella rigs at 25 to 40-foot depths. Team Johnson-Stevenson, both of Nacogdoches, Tex., would like to thank their sponsors: Custom Angle Rods, 6th Sense Lures, and Camo Pro. The anglers would also like to thank Jesus for the ability to fish and bites throughout the day, and their wives for their continued support. The team took home $4,500 for Saturday’s second place finish.

The team of Brandon Davidson and Ben Matsubu, of Little Elm, Tex. and Hemphill, Tex., respectively, was awarded third place and $2,500 for their 18.01-pound weigh-in. The anglers were unavailable for comment.

The day’s Big Bass payout of $500 went to the team of Dicky Newberry, of Houston, and Ken Smith, of Dallas, for their 10.60-pounder, caught by Newberry. The anglers commented that it was a “tough day” overall, and that they fished up until the very last second using Santone Black & Blue Football Jigs at 12-foot depths. Their fifth-place worthy sack weighed in at 15.54 pounds, and garnered the team an additional $1,500, totaling their winnings to over $2,000. Team Newberry-Smith would like to thank their sponsors: Need More Tackle, Lucas Oil. Also, the anglers would like to thank Abu Garcia, Costa Sunglasses, and Underarmour for their bonus prizes.
