Jerry Rakowitz brought in over 30 lbs by himself to win on Choke Canyon |

Fishing with a partner gives a team certain inherent tactical advantages. Two lures in the water, team effort in all situations throughout the day. Jerry Rakowitz fished without his regular partner and brought in over 30 lbs by himself to win the second event for the South region on Choke February 18th. Twenty six teams enjoyed a part of the $47,840.00 in cash and prizes awarded on this wet, cold windy day.
There have been several records set throughout the Bass Champs regions so far this year. First, on Amistad a South Region team set a new all time weigh record. Then, the East Texas division set an all time participant record. Now, for the first time ever a tie for Big Bass. Bass Champs anglers are setting a lot of all-time & first time records this year.
31.68 lbs took 1st place and Jerry Rakowitz was the lone angler who brought it in. “I didn’t think I had that much, and certainly didn’t think I would win! It was cold, drizzly, windy - in a word, it was miserable out there. All I had was six bites, and I lost one leaving the five that I weighed in.” One of his five shared Big Bass honors at 10.02 lbs. Rakowitz caught all of his fish on a Texas rigged Zoom magnum watermelon lizard. He found his fish in an area with lots of brush, hardwood and inside grass. His fish were shallow, from 2'-7'. “I lost one early, but had three in the boat by 9:30. The other two I caught between 11:30-noon.” Jerry took home all the glory and the new Skeeter SX190 powered by a 150hpdi Yamaha motor. He shared the Big Bass check, receiving $500 for it, and having a Keel Shield on his boat he also was awarded a free entry into the next tournament.
John Adams caught the other 10.02 lb Big Bass. He also received $500, had a Keel Shield on his boat and will also receive a free entry into the next event. “This is my first double digit bass! I was fishing off of an old tank dam in about 12' throwing a white/chartreuse spinnerbait with double willow white/chartreuse painted blades. It was about 8:30, and all of a sudden my line just got heavy. I didn’t realize how big she was until she came up trying to shake it off. After we got her in the live well, my partner Kenneth Land weighed her with the scales we had in the boat, but didn’t get her completely out of the water. Those scales read just over 9 lbs, so I was happily surprised when it weighed in over 10!”
Rick Shock and Jared Poole brought in a limit weighing 28.90 lbs winning 2nd place and a check for $2,500. They had a nice kicker in the bag weighing 7.12 lbs.
Jimmy Davis and Duane Lyssy won 3rd place with their 27.68 lb stringer. They had a nice kicker in the bunch weighing in at 9.24 lbs. “We fished secondary points just off of a creek channel with hardwood in 15'-22'. All of our fish came off of that one spot. We were throwing Texas and Carolina rigged watermelon gold Sweet Beavers, and by noon we had four in the boat” Jimmy said. “Duane had to leave at noon for family business, so we went to the boat ramp to drop him off. I went back and caught one more to make our limit.” Their 3rd place check was for $1,600 and they came up in the overall standings in this event from 14th to 2nd.
It was the 4th place team of Raymond Zetka and William Estes that won the Skeeter Bonus for being the highest finishing qualified Skeeter Boat owners, doubling their $1,300 win to a $2,600 finish.
Thank you to The Three Rivers Little League for bringing volunteers to help coordinate the weigh in. To help raise money for their organization, Bass Champs and their sponsors provided over $1400 worth of prizes for the drawing that everyone present is invited to participate in. Bass Champs matched the funds collected up to $500.
